60 thinkers orbiting the same attractor
There's a shape out there — too big to describe directly — but many people have intuited aspects of it over the years. Mathematicians, mystics, physicists, poets, philosophers, activists, biologists, composers. They're not all saying the same thing. But they're all circling something.
The Canon is a curated collection of thinkers who each touch a different facet of this attractor. They come from every era and tradition. They don't form a school or agree on a doctrine. What they share is harder to name: a quality of attention, a refusal to mistake the map for the territory, a sense that living process is fundamentally different from dead pattern.
Why on a math site? Because the Wet Math thesis is that non-commutativity — the fact that order of operations matters — is the coupling mechanism that holds complex living systems together. These thinkers, from their different domains, are all pointing at the same coupling. Some call it Tao, some call it love, some call it attention, some call it viriditas, some call it groove. Same shape.
What all 60 thinkers have in common
Looking across these thinkers, certain themes recur with uncanny consistency.
When does representation decouple from what it represents? McGilchrist, Dewart, Hoffman, Blake, Wilson all circle this question. Wynter's "Man" as map mistaken for territory at civilizational scale. Zhuangzi's butterfly dream: which is map, which is territory? Russell's paradox: when the map tries to contain itself, contradiction. Whitehead's fallacy of misplaced concreteness. Moses's "I am that I am" — refusing to become a name that can be mapped. Siddhartha's no-self: the self-map mistaken for territory creates suffering.
Reality as flux, becoming, relationship. Lao Tzu's Tao, Deacon's constraint, Woolf's moments of being. Butler's "God is Change" — transformation as fundamental, not achievement. Zhuangzi's transformation (hua) — all categories are moments in ongoing flow. Glissant's Relation as primary. Barad's intra-action — entities produced through entanglement, not prior to it. Noether's symmetry-conservation — the structure is what's real, instances are secondary. Whitehead's actual occasions — events, not substances, as fundamental.
Modes of knowing that don't split subject/object. Lao Tzu explicitly, Woolf's moments of being, Joyce's stream of consciousness. Ramanujan's mathematical seeing — direct access to territory without map. Heisenberg's participatory universe, Pauli's unus mundus. Barad's phenomena — observer and observed constituted together. Oliveros's Deep Listening — the listener not separate from the listened-to. Jesus's "kingdom within" — already here, a mode of perception. Siddhartha's no-self — the seeker and the sought are not two. Rumi's field beyond wrongdoing and rightdoing.
How organization arises through what's absent. Deacon's thermodynamic constraint, Campbell's mythic structure, Wolfram's Class 4 cellular automata. Bach's counterpoint rules generating surprise. Euclid's five postulates generating 465 propositions. Pythagoras's simple ratios producing cosmic harmony. Ramanujan's isolation as generative constraint — poverty producing novelty.
When do levels stay in conversation vs. decouple? The whole constellation asks variations of this question. Kimmerer's reciprocity as metabolic coupling. Lorde's erotic as coupling between action and felt sources. Haraway's sympoiesis — nothing makes itself, all making is making-with. hooks' love as active maintenance of relationship. Buber's I-Thou as genuine meeting vs. I-It as decoupled relation. Levin's bioelectricity as coupling medium; cancer as decoupling. Cohen's crack admitting light vs. polished surface blocking it.
The Tao that can be spoken, Joyce's linguistic rebellion, Dewart's copula as cage. All of them trying to say what language makes hard to say. Ramanujan's theorems arriving without proof — seeing beyond available language. Kimmerer's grammar of animacy — different grammars encode different relationships. Glissant's right to opacity — resistance to full linguistic capture. Moses's "I am that I am" — the divine that refuses to be named. Jesus's parables — stories that refuse to resolve into single meanings. Lalla's vakhs — poems that perform dissolution while describing it.
What gets repressed, how it returns, what integration means. Jung's shadow work, Blake's contraries, Campbell's monomyth as confrontation with what was rejected. Diogenes living in the shadow, making rejected behaviors visible. Lorde's anger as information, not noise. hooks' healing as necessary for continued struggle. Glissant's creolization — integration that preserves difference. Cohen's crack as opening. Machig's Chod — feeding demons instead of fighting them. Mirabai's scandal — shadow integration as byproduct of total commitment.
Circulation vs. accumulation as organizing principles. Kimmerer's gift ecology — serviceberry economics, honorable harvest. Yunkaporta's First Law — nothing created or destroyed, everything moves. Lorde's erotic as resource requiring renewal, not depletion. hooks' love as practice requiring energy. Glissant's creolization as mutual transformation, not extraction. Butler's Shaping — participation in change rather than control.
Against universalism, monoculture, and forced commensurability. Hui's technodiversity — different cosmologies produce different technologies. Glissant's opacity and rhizome — the right to be irreducible. Haraway's sympoiesis — no single origin, multiple connections. Wynter's genres of being human — against Man's overrepresentation. Lorde's difference as strength, not problem to solve. Le Guin's ambiguous utopias — flawed experiments, not blueprints. Deleuze/Guattari's rhizome vs. tree: multiple connections, no center. Borges's forking paths: all possibilities occur.
Heisenberg's uncertainty, the observer's participation. Cronin's assembly index as detector of selection. What gets measured, what gets lost in measurement. The map changing the territory through the act of mapping. Barad's agential realism — measurement constitutes, not just discovers. Oliveros's listening as transformation — how we listen shapes what we hear. Haraway's situated knowledge — stronger objectivity through acknowledged partiality. Noether's theorem — symmetry reveals what's conserved through transformation.
Hofstadter's strange loops, Bach's fugal architecture, consciousness as the system modeling itself modeling itself. Godel's incompleteness, the limits of formal systems. Russell's paradox: self-reference that breaks the system. Borges's "Circular Ruins": dreaming the dreamer. Whitehead's prehension: occasions including occasions.
What are they all circling?
Something about... when systems decouple from consequence and start running on their own models. When the feedback loop closes. When G goes to zero in the wrong way. When the finite game takes over. When left hemisphere capture happens, when copula trains you to reify, when the interface stops updating, when the Tao gets named and frozen, when Urizen's maps become tyrants, when Man overrepresents itself as the human, when extraction replaces reciprocity, when the erotic is suppressed and we lose the measure.
And the flip side: what it means to stay coupled. To maintain dynamic integrity. To play the infinite game. To let levels interfere productively (Bach's counterpoint, Hofstadter's strange loops, Wolfram's Class 4, Noether's symmetry-conservation). To preserve the space where genuine response remains possible (Jung's individuation, Campbell's return, Coltrane's search, Butler's Shaping, Zhuangzi's wu wei). To practice reciprocity (Kimmerer's gift, Yunkaporta's First Law, hooks' love, Lorde's erotic). To honor opacity and difference (Glissant's right to be irreducible, Haraway's sympoiesis, Hui's technodiversity).
All these thinkers, in their different domains, are mapping the same territory: the difference between living process and dead pattern. Between coupling and cascade. Between flow and fixation. Between circulation and accumulation. Between relationship and extraction.
Different vocabularies. Same shape. The attractor is still emerging.
